For 90 minutes, the hosts pushed, crossed, pressed, and created chances at Swangard Stadium. Just when it looked like Halifax Tides FC would have to settle for a point, Julia Benati produced a moment of magic from near the halfway line, sending a long-range effort over Jessica Wulf to snatch a 1-0 victory for the visitors.
It was a frustrating ending for a Rise side that had controlled large stretches of the match.
Vancouver came out on the front foot, immediately putting Halifax under pressure. Maithé López and Jessica De Filippo both found space behind the Tides' back line early, but neither could quite get onto the end of the passes played in behind.
Halifax gradually settled into the game, turning the match into a physical midfield battle. The Rise continued to look for ways through, particularly from wide areas, but their deliveries into the box repeatedly lacked the final touch.
Their best chance of the opening half came in the 40th minute.
Camila Reyes sent a free kick into the area, where Alex Lamontagne rose to meet it. Her header was on target, but Halifax goalkeeper Anika Toth was perfectly positioned to collect it.
Latifah Abdu came even closer just before half-time. Mia Pante's cross floated toward the back post and found the forward, but the angle left Abdu with little room to work with, and her effort bounced just wide.
Vancouver came out of the break hungry to find an opening.
Anna Bout nearly broke the deadlock inside the opening ten minutes of the second half when the ball fell to her on the edge of the box. She struck through it cleanly, keeping the shot low, but Toth got down to make another important save.
Then came wave after wave of pressure.
The Rise piled up corners and continued sending balls into the Halifax box, searching for the one touch that would finally turn their pressure into a goal.
In the 75th minute, Anaïs Oularbi nearly provided it herself.
Standing more than 30 yards from goal, Oularbi stepped over a free kick and unleashed a powerful strike that flew narrowly past the near post.
Vancouver continued to push as the clock wound down.
Audrey François had perhaps the final opportunity to steal all three points in stoppage time after Abdu cut the ball back into her path. François was charging onto it, but the pass skipped just beyond her reach.
Then, deep into added time, Halifax found its winner through Julia Benati.
Benati spotted Wulf off her line and went for it from distance, sending the ball sailing over the Rise goalkeeper and into the net from near the halfway line.
One moment was all Halifax needed.
The goal was reminiscent of De Filippo's spectacular 35-yard goal against Calgary Wild FC around this same point of the season last year — the kind of strike that can instantly change a game.
For Vancouver, it was a harsh result after a performance that had seen them create enough opportunities to take something from the match. Instead, the Rise were left empty-handed despite controlling much of the second-half momentum.
