Mark your calendars.
The
CPL will be revealing the schedule for the opening matches on Friday, January 27. The full schedule will be released on Monday, January 30.
Most exciting possible opening match-ups
If we're going off by the past CPL seasons, there is a big chance that
Forge host
Atlético Ottawa in the opening weekend. In 2 of the 3 past CPL seasons, the defending champion hosted the runner-up. In 2020, Forge was going to host Cavalry in the opening match, until COVID hit and the season was moved elsewhere. Forge still faced Cavalry in the opening match. In 2021, We didn't see a Forge FC vs. HFX Wanderers, but in 2022, Pacific hosted Forge at Starlight.
Pacific FC vs.
Vancouver FC: What better way than to play your first ever match against your provincial rivals? Regardless of where this match is played, a big away contingent can be expected. Unfortunately, it appears Vancouver FC's stadium won't be ready for the opening weekend, as the
Canadian Championship draw details suggested. Although, even if the stadium isn't ready, the atmosphere at Starlight Stadium would be incredible.
Forge FC vs.
Cavalry FC: If you watch the CPL, I don't think I even need to explain why this would be a good opening match.
York United vs. any of the 2022 top 4 teams: York was on an incredible run late in the season last year, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to qualify, as they had dropped many points in the early parts of the season. They've kept a big core of their 2022 team, and they showed that they can easily make the play-offs this year. Remember that match away at Starlight Stadium against Pacific? York was simply INCREDIBLE. Just take a look at the full-time expected goals:
Personally, I would love to see a Pacific FC vs. Vancouver FC at Starlight, I think the atmosphere would be insane in a match like that, and hopefully we see some away contingent.
Update:
Northern Tribune reveals that the opening weekend will be based around the weekend of April 15.
